- Bruce Schneier: Applied Cryptography, 2nd edition. John Wiley & Sons, 1995.An excellent practically oriented presentation of cryptographic algorithms, protocols, andmethods. Definitely recommended reading. The errata forthe 2nd edition is available on the Internet.
- Alfred J. Menezes, Paul C. van Oorschot and Scott A. Vanstone: Handbook of AppliedCryptography. CRC Press, 1996. An excellent book too. Somewhat more theoretical andhas more pseudo-code than Schneier's book. Informationabout the book on the web.
- Charlie Kaufman, Radia Perlman, and Mike Speciner: Network Security - PRIVATECommunication in a PUBLIC World. Prentice-Hall, 1995. Covers practically relevantareas of cryptography in an understandable way.
- Jennifer Seberry and Josed Pieprzyk: Cryptography: An Introduction to ComputerSecurity. Prentice-Hall, 1989. Somewhat more theoretically oriented than the above.
- Man Young Rhee: Cryptography and Secure Data Communications. McGraw-Hill, 1994.
- Hans Riesel: Prime Numbers and Computer Methods for Factorization. Birkhauser,1994. Concentrates on prime numbers and factoring large integers, and discusses theirapplication to RSA and other public key methods.
- Xuejia Lai: On the Design and Security of Block Ciphers, ETH Series inInformation Processing, vol. 1, Hartung-Gorre Verlag, Konstanz, Switzerland, 1992. Thisbook contains the description and analysis of the IDEA cipher. Parts of the book arerather theoretical, but it is straightforward to write an implementation based on it.
- Donald Davies and Wyn Price: Security for Computer Networks, John Wiley, 1989.The first edition came in 1984, so its material on standards and protocols is fairlydated, but the main sections about DES (including modes, triple DES etc) and public keycryptography are often very much appreciated by those who are neither mathematicians norwizards at C, but still want to understand what is going on in the algorithms.

- Computers & Security often contains articles on cryptography (often = everyother or third issue). It is bublished by Elsevier Advanced Technology, P O Box 150,Kidlington, Oxford, OX5 1AS, UK, Editor John Meyer, E-mail j.meyer@elsevier.co.uk. It isnow into volume 14 and usually has 8 issues a year.
- Cryptologia deals mainly with crypto history and hobby cryptography but sometimeshas other articles too. It is a quarterly journal published at United States MilitaryAcademy, West Point N Y 10996-9902, USA from the Department of Mathematical Sciences, where one of the editors, Brian Winkel works.
- Cryptosystem Journal talks about cryptosystem implementations on the IBM PC andother assorted topics. It has a home page.
- There must be other journals. Mail to ylo@cs.hut.fi if you have more information.
